Mind Dump 101

Posted on December 21, 2015 by vernsix Posted in Self-Sufficiency .

note-cardsThe past two articles in this series have talked a great deal about being frugal. Part of being frugal and a big part of living the self-sufficient lifestyle is thinking about long range goals and staying put long enough to see those goals realized.

After I was severely injured in a freak fishing accident in 2005, I wasn’t able to do much for the next three years. I had developed a severe case of cabin fever to say the least and once I was able to get back to some form of a normal life, I was ready to travel. Ranae and I spent several months full time in our fifth-wheel trailer traveling and volunteering across much of the western United States. After that, we moved to Guatemala and served as full time missionaries at an orphanage there. Continue reading →

What is the self-sufficient lifestyle (Part 2)?

Posted on December 13, 2015 by vernsix Posted in Family Fun, Self-Sufficiency, tea .

checkboardLast week I started this series of articles to hopefully give you a road map for deciding if this self sufficient lifestyle is really for you or not. As I addressed in that first article in this series, I think frugality is very important. In fact, it was the single most important point for both Ranae and I as we embarked on this lifestyle many years ago.

One reader wrote to me with a great question/point, after reading last week’s article. I never really defined what “self-sufficient” means. I eluded to the fact that you could ask ten different people what the term means, and you would probably get ten different answers. But I never really told you what I think it means. I like this definition the best, “Living simply and efficiently; making everything we do and everything we consume stretch as far as possible.” Continue reading →

What is the self-sufficient lifestyle?

Posted on December 7, 2015 by vernsix Posted in Self-Sufficiency .

Tonight Ranae and I had an opportunity to meet a nice couple we had became friends with on Facebook. They own a local business and back in September they came to a prayer event I hosted at our little town square for the local law enforcement officers. They learned of the prayer event via my “According To Vern” Facebook page and we have been friends online since. We decided we had a lot in common so we took the opportunity to actually meet face-to-face for dinner tonight. It was a wonderful evening to say the least. Nicer people would be hard to find and I am certain we will be long term friends.

During the conversation tonight we discussed how so many people in this area have the self-sufficient mindset. We never used the term “prepper”, but I think we were all in agreement that a lot of people see the need to be prepared these days. While that’s a sad commentary on the state of things in this country, I will leave that political discussion alone for the purposes of this article. Continue reading →
