Insomnia

Posted on November 30, 2015 by vernsix Posted in Natural Cures, tea .

insomniaI hope everyone had a wonderfully blessed Thanksgiving this past week. Time spent with family and friends is such a blessing, not to mention all the great food. I ate entirely too much food as usual, and it was a great holiday for sure.

The discussion about the old myth that “eating turkey makes you tired” came up after we all ate more than our fair share of food this past Thursday. This myth has long been disproved. Contrary to popular belief, eating turkey isn’t the real reason you feel sleepy after the big Thanksgiving meal. Continue reading →

Happy Thanksgiving – Clean up made easy

Posted on November 22, 2015 by vernsix Posted in Cooking, Make Your Own .

HappyThanksgivingThis week is Thanksgiving. The start of the holiday season and one of my single favorite days of the year. I am, after all, a fat man and like to eat. 🙂 I also happen to be married to the best cook I have ever met. But time spent with her family and reflecting on all the blessings of the previous year are really what this holiday is all about for us.

The first time I met Ranae’s family was at their Thanksgiving Day feast in 2000. It was quite the spread. We had four tables, complete with the leaves installed, pushed together in the family’s dining room, just to seat everyone. The tables extended clear into the family’s den. Her father cooked the turkey that year and since I was the new guy, he asked me to help. Which meant… I got to help clean up after we all got through eating. Continue reading →

Friday the 13th Paris Massacre

Posted on November 15, 2015 by vernsix Posted in Uncategorized .

france-flagI had every intention of continuing my simple little weekly column and write another article about the lifestyle that Ranae and I have chosen to build for ourselves. But with the tragedy in Paris this past Friday, I just couldn’t seem to write about anything else this week.

I have been to Paris more times than I can count. I used to live in London, England for about four years. I spent a countless number of my weekends in Paris. It’s a city full of life, color and excitement. The food is incredible. The people are amazing and it is, without a doubt, one of my favorite places on Earth. Continue reading →

MURS radio and the hunt for Bambi’s daddy

Posted on November 9, 2015 by vernsix Posted in Family Fun, Ham Radio, hunting, MURS Radio .

610ppxrtXTL._SL1200_Deep in the heart of Texas the only thing close to as important as high school football is the elusive hunt for Bambi’s daddy. Deer season here began this past Saturday and the woods were alive with hunters on the chase for the prize mount and a freezer full of “free” meat.

I don’t hunt much these days, unless it’s with my camera, but I certainly have and I can understand the desire to do so. Most hunters will tell you, there isn’t much they enjoy more than hanging out with a group of guys (and gals too) at deer camp on the first weekend of the season. The time spent with others, in pursuit of the biggest deer, creates some great times and usually some even greater stories about the one that walked by, just beyond the range of where a shot could be taken. Homemade Fabric Softener

Posted on November 2, 2015 by vernsix Posted in Make Your Own .

Wow! Is it November already? Seems like July was just yesterday. Where did this year go? It has certainly flown by, at least here at Six Acres. Now that Halloween is over, I’m sure when I drive through the little town nearest me, I will already see Christmas lights up. LOL

This week I will continue with some simple and cost effective ways to save money by making stuff yourself. I have countless make-your-own things to discuss, but most of them pertain to summer time activities so I will save some of those until next April or May. For now, let’s stick with laundry since that’s a costly activity that happens year round. Continue reading →
