Beautyberry

according-to-vern-2015-09-27This time of year is my absolute favorite time to say the least. I love watching the colors start to change and noticing the things in our garden and around “Six Acres” that aren’t here the rest of the year. It’s the time we start planting our fall garden and sitting outside at night to watch the moon in the evenings, etc.

While mosquitoes are more often thought of during the spring and summer, I live in Texas and they still exist here at this time of year. This time of year brings a pretty berry that helps repel these pesky little flying insects though. Continue reading →

I love a good fall salad

according-to-vern-2015-09-20When Ranae and I first returned to the USA, we bought some land in Missouri. A beautiful place, but brrrr was it cold in the winter. I will never forget our first fall there in the Show-Me state. Ranae came in one fall evening and asked me “Would you like a salad tonight?” She knows I am a sucker for a good salad. Friends In Rural Places

according-to-vern-2015-09-10According to the latest US Census data, nearly one-fourth of Americans live in rural areas. I have read studies, as well as seen with my own eyes, about 40% of the entire world lives in remote or rural areas.

Living remote has incredible rewards, in my not so humble opinion. While I think it’s the best type of living possible, if I am honest about it, there are some inconveniences as well. Living a significant distance from a major city brings challenges that most city dwellers rarely face nor are they willing to. Continue reading →
